California Dental Insurance
... looking for an
Individual Plan for yourself and your
family?
|
With companies
cutting back on benefits
and downsizing, more and more individuals across
California find that they have to
purchase individual dental insurance plans for themselves and
family members.
According to
the California Dental Association, most
dental coverage is designed to ensure that the
patient receives regular preventive care. For restorative and major dentistry
work, plans are designed to pay a portion of costs, essentially
reducing your out-of-pocket expenses associated
with care. For many, having a
plan makes seeing the dentist affordable. Regular visits
and care keeps the patient in good oral
health.
Options
available
Indemnity plans
allow you to use any dentist and is the
most expensive type of insurance.
The insurance usually picks up 50% -
80% of the cost of restorative
treatment and 100% for preventive
care. Keep in mind that these
plans have waiting periods of 6
to 18 months before
restorative dentistry services (fillings,
extractions) and major
dentistry services (root
canals, crowns, dentures, bridges) are
covered. Orthodontics (braces) benefit may
require additional cost and cosmetic
dentistry is almost never covered.
On averages, the annual
maximum dollar amount of
work paid out per year is $1,000
per person and $50
deductible per person per family. Indemnity
dental insurance plans run from about $50
for one person to $200 per month for
families.
Managed Care
PPO
plans allow you to visit any dental office
within their network for maximum savings. You may
also use the plan to see dentists outside the
network but your out-of-pocket expenses will be
higher. The insurance usually picks
up 50% - 80% of the cost of restorative
treatment and 80% - 100% for preventive care.
They may have waiting periods of 3
to 12 months before restorative and major
dentistry services like root canals, oral
surgery and crowns are covered. Orthodontics
(braces) coverage may not come
with cheaper PPO plans but available with plans
with higher premiums. Cosmetic
dentistry is almost never covered.
On
average, the annual maximum dollar amount of
work paid out per year is $1,000 per person and
$50 deductible per person per
family. PPO dental insurance
plans run from about $30 for one
person to $100 per month for families.
Discount
Dental plans allow you to visit any dental office
within their network for maximum
savings. They provide plan members access
to a negotiated fee schedule that is
substantially lower than the usual and
customary charges of the
dentist. A good plan usually provides
discounts of 25% - 60% for restorative dentistry
and up to 80% off on preventive care.
Techinically, these plans are not insurance, but
as reported by the US News and World report, the
model is based on the bargaining power
of a large buyers club to
provide cost savings to members.
As such, a consumer does not have to deal with
"waiting periods" before any work, eg. fillings,
extractions and root canals are
covered. You can
use all dental benefits
immediately. Orthodontics (braces) and
Cosmetic dentistry are both included.
There are no annual maxium
limits or dollar amount caps associated
with using this plan, nor are there any "deductibles"
to worry about. This plan works with
pre-existing conditions. At less than
$20 per month for families, many users find that it's a great
deal.
